April 9, 2025

As a photographer, I love capturing life’s sweetest moments—especially babies and growing families. Lately, I’ve been thinking about infertility because so many of my clients are trying to conceive. It’s close to my heart seeing their hope and strength. On my blog, where I celebrate new beginnings, I want to honor their journeys too. Every photo I take feels a joyful milestone, no matter how long it took to get there when trying to get pregnant, in knoxville TN.

Today I’m sharing 3 surprising things that can impact fertility when trying to get pregnant. While some factors like age and genetics cannot be changed, there are many other things that may be affecting your fertility without you even realizing it!

Before we dive in, I just wanted to offer a quick friendly reminder that while this blog post provides helpful information, it’s always a good idea to talk to your doctor if you’re having fertility issues. This blog post is meant to be helpful and informative but it’s definitely not a substitute for medical advice.

Okay, now let’s get started!

Stress

Turns out that the daily stressors of adulting can actually impact your fertility when trying to get pregnant. Stress can mess with ovulation, disrupt the menstrual cycle, and even decrease sperm count in men.

Think about finding fun ways to reduce your stress levels, such as meditation, yoga, or therapy. Here are 3 that I really like.

Take Gentle Walks – Step outside, breathe in the fresh air, and let a short walk soothe your mind. It’s a quiet way to feel grounded and give yourself a little break from the waiting.

Create Something – Pick up a pencil, paintbrush, or try an new recipe and let your hands make something beautiful. It’s a sweet distraction that lifts your spirit.

Lean on Loved Ones – Call a friend, cuddle with your spouse, or share a laugh with someone you trust. Those warm connections can ease your heart and remind you you’re not alone on this journey.

A great local resource is MindBody Knox they offer yoga and meditation in Knoxville Tn. They have so many relaxing offerings form sauna to mental health and more! Defiantly check them out! When is comes to trying to get pregnant in Knoxville TN and finding resources to help you I want to make it simple and helpful. Let’s keep going 🙂

Lack of Sleep

Getting enough sleep is essential for your overall health, and it also plays a significant role in fertility. A lack of sleep can disrupt hormonal balance, decrease sperm count, and even cause irregular periods.

A 2022 study found that women who slept for less than six hours per night had a higher risk of infertility compared to women who slept for seven to eight hours per night (Poli et al., 2018).

If you’re struggling to get enough sleep right now due to maybe having a new baby or your work schedule

Something I have tried to practice is to set an alarm and that reminds me to stop looking at my screen when bedtime comes around. You could also use a phone setting to restrict the blue light, but I know I get better sleep when I stop scrolling.

Poor Diet

Hey, I’m not the diet police and I’m not perfect all the time with diet, but I think it comes down to finding what works for you, creating a balance, and what is sustainable for you so it can become a lifestyle and not a diet. I have kept this rule in my mind, plan to eat good 80% of the time and enjoy the other 20%. This helps it not feel so much about perfection.

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is crucial for your fertility. Foods that are high in processed sugars and unhealthy fats can interfere with hormonal balance and decrease sperm count.

An easy way to get more fruits and veggies into your diet is to buy them frozen. Frozen fruits and veggies are just as nutritious as buying them fresh, but they don’t go bad as quickly.

Additionally, many grocery stores now offer pre-chopped or pre-washed produce options that make healthy eating even easier! This is where I live 🙂

Some go to clean food ideas are:

  • Breakfast smoothie (my go to right now- a scoop of protein powder…I like this ONE, 1/2c berries, 1/4 gluten free rolled oats, 1tbsp peanut or almond butter…watch out for added sugars and seed oils I prefer the Kroger natural PB, its just peanuts and salt, 1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk or water, 2-3 ice cubes, and some spinach. I am not a breakfast person, but this helps get in some added protein in the morning.
  • Lunch – salad (prewashed 😉 with cheese, tomatoes, grilled chicken and simple homemade ranch
  • snack – zero sugar Greek yogurt with blueberries, some granola, and a drizzle of honey, I also love GOMacro bars for on the go.
  • Dinner – grilled chicken, steak, ground chicken taco bowl, add veggies and a starch like sweet potatoes, quinoa, and rice

This is all about making the little decisions count and taking it one meal at a time. Keep it simple and easy and meal prep when possible.
